چکیده

We study a search model where workers can send multiple applications to high and low productivity firms. Firms that compete for the same candidate can increase their wage offers as often as they like. We show that there is a unique equilibrium where workers mix between sending both applications to the high and both to the low productivity sector. Efficiency requires however that they apply to both sectors because then the coordination frictions are lowest. For many configurations, the equilibrium outcomes are the same under directed and random search. Allowing for free entry creates a second source of inefficiency. JEL codes: D83, E24, J23, J24, J64

Exporting, Licensing, FDI and Productivity Choice: Theory and Evidence from Chilean Data*

This paper develops a trade model in which two heterogeneous firms located in two different countries make their productivity choices by choosing their optimal R&D investment levels and then make a mode choice between exporting, licensing and FDI under Cournot competition in an open economy. The ex-ante difference in the cost efficiency of two firms will lead to difference combinations of ex-po...

1 Career Assessment

We characterize optimal contracts for insurance coverage of a service whose price may vary across service providers. Households must engage in costly search to learn the price of a particular service firm, and the presence of insurance reduces incentive to search. There is a continuum of ex-ante identical consumers and firms. Search is simultaneous as in Burdett and Judd (1983). We construct a ...

Outside offers and bidding costs

This paper provides a search theoretic model with endogenous job creation, and homogenous workers and firms. The model introduces bidding costs and allows the current employer to make a countero=er with probability ‡ when the worker receives an outside o=er. In equilibrium, a higher level of ex-post competition (‡) reduces the probability that an employed worker receives an outside o=er. Theref...

Capacity Sharing between Competitors*

Market competition may lead to mismatch between supply and demand. That is, overpricing may give rise to underselling, and underpricing may yield stockout. Capacity sharing is a common practice to align excessive capacity with excessive demand. Yet the strategic interaction between competition and capacity sharing has not been adequately addressed. In this paper we investigate optimal strategie...

Integrating competition policy and innovation policy: the case of R&D cooperation

I develop a model of R&D cooperation with uncertain research outcomes. In this model asymmetric outcomes of R&D competition emerge naturally. Therefore ex-ante and ex-post R&D cooperation can be studied as alternatives for firms. Using this model I compare welfare losses under ex-ante and ex-post R&D cooperation as the degree of product market competition varies. It emerges that the relative si...
